

Texas has 1,250 Independent School Districts. Several conservative political action committees with a lot of money have begun lobbying and encouraging people to attend school board meetings where they read aloud selected passages, usually out of context, with the goal of banning these books. In 2021, A Texas Republican released a list of 879 book titles that he felt would make school children feel “guilt, discomfort, or anguish.” Many of the titles on his list cover important moments in black history, sex education, or characters that are LGBTQ. Given that there are over 200 books being challenged, there will be quite a backlog as the manager has a reading list of 228 books. The director will then decide whether the material(s) will be withdrawn or retained in the collection.

The reviews, the manager’s recommendation, and letter will be submitted to the director for review.

Step 3. When the completed form is returned, the manager will read the material(s) in question, retrieve reviews of the material, and write a letter of recommendation to the patron regarding its status in the library’s collection.
